CHAOS IS OPPORTUNITY

They were just guarding the oil fields in Kirkuk…

But that put Jeff Stone and the shooters of Praetorian Security into a prime position to go on the hunt.

Iraq is crumbling. The Arabs and Kurds are on the brink of open war, and terrorists run amok. The US has no official presence in the country anymore, and the violence is accelerating.

Jeff and his fellow contractors declared war after the bloodbath in East Africa. And as the chaos spreads and the body count rises, they’re going to slip through the shadows and take some bad actors down.

The American Praetorian series continues in bloodshed and gunsmoke, as the Praetorian shooters blast their way through irregular war at its worst!

Run toward the sounds of gunfire and get it today!

Hunting in the Shadows American Praetorians Book 2 edition by Peter Nealen Literature Fiction eBooks

This is a great follow-up to Task Force Desperate (American Praetorians Book 1), though you don't necessary need to read that book in order to enjoy this one. Like the first book in the series, this one is very competently written and well-edited, with great detail when it comes to the setting, locations, and action scenes. This book is seriously far more professionally written than many books published by mainstream publishers these days.

Unfortunately, Peter Nealen's still lacking in detail when it comes to his characters. At least in this volume, we learn a bit more about characters' backgrounds and personalities, but it's still difficult remembering who is who at times, especially, say, differentiating Bob or Jim from Larry, when we know very little about them. At least refer to them by their distinctive and colorful call signs, like Brad Taylor does, to set them apart.

But Jeff Stone, the main character and narrator, is more developed here, as we get more insight into his thought process and personality in this book. The detailed firefights are some of the most realistic I've ever read. Nealen doesn't do over the top, impossible, cinematic action scenes. The portrayal of Iraq's convoluted politics are informative, and little details about Iraqi culture and society bring the setting to life. The book's near-future, dystopian setting is also believable and well-handled without straying too far out there with unbelievable premises.

American Praetorians is shaping up to be one of my favorite series. I'm looking forward to reading Alone and Unafraid (American Praetorians Book 3) next, and I hope Peter Nealen will have publish many more volumes.

Hunting in the Shadows American Praetorians Book 2 edition by Peter Nealen Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This was a worthy sequel to the Task Force Desperate, first novel in the series, with a lot of solid action sequences and a continuation of the same deteriorating world set up in TFD. As mentioned in my review of that novel, readers without a firm understanding of the political situation in the regions covered in this novel might need to do some Googling and other homework in order to keep the various factions and territories straight in their minds while reading, especially since this book is set in the near-future.

My only quibble, if there is one, is that the story feels like it builds a bit slowly, and I felt as if the end goal / approaching climax wasn't as clearly defined as it was in the first book. The characters move from one action to another and each set piece definitely works, but I feel like the larger narrative was a bit blurry. Nevertheless, this was a good read, from a skilled author with top-notch action sequences. For readers like me who really dig military adventure fiction with a lot of detail and a strong grasp of real-world weapons and tactics, this series is a must.
Peter Nealen is a former Reconnaissance Marine who has walked the walk, and can talk the talk, as evidenced by the first novel of his American Praetorian series, TASK FORCE DESPERATE. In a first person narrative revolving around former Recon Marine Jeff Stone, he took us on a wild and dreadful adventure through Dijibouti and Somalia, one that ended in a pyrrhic victory.

The follow-up novel, HUNTING IN THE SHADOWS, is even more violent, bleaker, and more twisted. In the wake of the withdrawal from Iraq, the situation in country has predictably gone from bad to worse. Stone, now a Praetorian team leader, is officially assigned to provide security to Liberty Petroleum, a Western oil company. Unofficially, the Praetorians are on the ground to continue what they started in the Horn of Africa a year earlier take the fight to jihadists since a broken United States cannot and will not.

Nealen's descriptions of combat are tight and brutal, the words of a man who has lived through such experiences. What was particularly impressive to me as a fellow Iraq veteran was his spot-on analysis of the situation on the ground a cluster of various Islamic groups all fighting each other and most of them simultaneously allied against the West. This was very much the situation on the ground when I was there in 2008 and 2009.

Another plus is that we learn more about Stone, the man and not Stone, the mercenary. These moments are fleeting and few, but bear a stark contrast to the heavy helping of fighting. It helps the reader to better relate to Stone and feel his pain.

HUNTING IN THE SHADOWS is a violent yet educational thrill ride from start to finish, and a must have for fans of the genre, a stark contrast from the Brad Thor-type thrillers.
